Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

Here at Lunada, we love getting the chance to help out our community as much as we can. So, on May 8, we got the exciting chance to participate in the Habitat for Humanity sponsored by XCIP (Xerox) event. Once our Principal Designer, Jane Biggeln, found out about the opportunity to volunteer she immediately spread the word to all of us at the office and there was no turning back. Of course we wanted to help out!

The Habitat for Humanity volunteer project consisted of the last 4 homes of a 7 home project in Lynwood, CA. Previous volunteers had made a lot of progress on this project throughout the year before we arrived. The homes were almost ready to move in leaving some things to help wrap up. We were assigned jobs by our Habitat for Humanity construction supervisor and crew leaders. Who by the way were so welcoming and helpful! They were always willing to answer any questions we had or do a demonstration for us. We helped out by cutting and laying tiles, painting doors and baseboards, caulking, installing a closet door, sanding stair railings, and more.

Going into this experience some of us didn’t know what to expect or what Habitat for Humanity was all about. The families that will be moving into these homes are required to put in a certain number of hours to help build their future home with Habitat for Humanity. So not only were they working to build their home from scratch they were also building a community together at the same time. So, when move-in time came around they already knew who their neighbors were and had a sense of comradery and family.

Helping to create homes for the families and the volunteer experience in itself was amazing! The leaders and participants truly made this experience one to never forget.

Check out some of our memories from volunteering with Habitat for Humanity below.
